Tom Boyd hails contribution of home-grown Hoops hero

Posted by Rik Sellers on

Celtic great Tom Boyd has hailed Callum McGregor’s big-game mentality after the midfielder’s stunner in the Scottish Cup final helped the Hoops seal a historic Double Treble.

The 24-year-old opened the scoring with a ferocious 20-yard strike into the top corner as the champions went on to defeat Motherwell 2-0 in the Hampden showpiece and lift the trophy.

It wasn’t the first time the Celtic Youth Academy graduate had made a telling contribution in a match of major magnitude this season. He was the only Hoops player to find the net every competition, including the UEFA Champions League and the Europa League.

And he was also on target in the 5-0 rout of Rangers as Brendan Rodgers’ side clinched seven-in-a-row and the convincing Scottish Cup semi-final victory against the Ibrox side.

Boyd, who coached McGregor for a spell in the club’s youth set-up, said: “We have got big-game players here at Celtic and none more so than Callum McGregor at the moment. The goals he’s scored have been so important. I’m glad he watched me in training, on how to not do it, all those years ago when I was helping out with the kids!

“Callum has been outstanding in his finishing. At the club at this time, we have so many guys who can change the course of the game and that’s why we are where we are. It’s a fantastic time to be a Celtic supporter right now and I just do not want it to end.”

Boyd enjoyed many memorable moments as a player for the club. He skippered the side that ‘stopped the 10’ and he was still club captain when the Celts secured the domestic treble in 2001, the first time they had done so in 32 years.

But the former Scotland internationalist, who was on commentary duties for Celtic TV for the triumph at Hampden last weekend, admitted that he’s living the dream as a supporter, given the remarkable record-breaking achievements of the current side.

“This moment at the club, we’re living a dream that’s become a reality in terms of how many records Brendan is breaking,” said the Club Ambassador.

“Last year it was invincible, this year the Double Treble. It’s just a great time to be a Celtic supporter just now with what we’re achieving and what we’re doing."

"The feel-good factor just never seems to leave this place in terms of where we are under Brendan has been astonishing. Entering six domestic competitions and winning them is a tough ask. It shows you the level of consistency and the demands Brendan has for the players in terms of making so many players better players and making them a team that is feared throughout Scotland.

"It had never been done before in Scottish football and that shows you how difficult it is. Since we started competing for the three trophies, it shows you where Celtic Football Club is at this moment in time.

"I go back to the early 1990s and where we were as a club at that time, and there are older supporters than can go back further to when we weren’t successful, so I’m sure every Celtic supporter will be enjoying where we are at this moment in time and looking forward to everything.

"Obviously, we need a break for the players to get a rest but Celtic supporters wouldn’t have wanted the season to finish, with the success we’re getting. I’m just glad I’m watching and been part of this history.”
